What is your teaching philosophy?
One that I have found to work really well is to find a way to relate the topic we are working on with the student's life and interests.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I will spend time talking to the student to get to know them, their learning style, where they are excelling and where they feel they need additional help. I will work with them to create a learning plan for all of our sessions.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will work with the student in small steps toward becoming an independent learner. I will start by finding the areas that the student is most confident in and help to build independence in those areas, and then work our way through areas where the student is not as confident. I will never leave a student out on their own until they are ready.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Every person has something different that motivates them, so I would start by finding out what motivates each student. Then, we would work together to create a system.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will work with the student to find a new way or different way to explain that skill or concept. I would also look at the student's learning style and see if I could find examples or lessons that fit that students learning style. Another approach that I will take is to find a way to fit that skill or concept into a typical life example that the student can relate to.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I find reading materials that are of interest to the student, and then we take small parts of the reading and do a sets of skill building exercises. We continue this process, with me leading by example, and then the student taking on more independence as they are learning.
