What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe you need to be as devoted to teaching as you can be. You have to give it your all when it comes to teaching; if not, you are failing yourself and others.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will sit down and get to know the student. What they may like and not like. What they think they are struggling with. This way I can create fun and exciting lesson plans for their sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them ways to learn, even when they are not with me. My goal is to make it so they do not need me, and can do it on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would continue to be positive in every session, and strive to see what they want to be in life. Also, I'd relate that to how important it is to do well in school if they want to get their dream job.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Patience is always key; if one teaching method is not working, then you need to try a new one. Until you find the teaching method that will help that student understand the skill.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I find books that interest them, so they are more interested while they are reading. I also ask questions after each chapter. I have them underline while reading as well.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

To make sure they trust you, that you are a teacher, but you are friendly and kind. Make it fun so they do not fight with you about the work. Learn who your student is.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would have to find something that they love and use it while teaching them in the subject they are struggling with.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I think making your own tests is a great way to see if the student is understanding the material you are giving them.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive reinforcement, even if they get something wrong. Let them know that is okay, and they will get it at some point. It just takes a little extra work.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I think it is best to talk to the parent or a teacher. Then, talk to the student, getting as much information as I can. The more information I have, the better I can tell what the student needs from me.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It all depends from student to student. You have to pay close attention to your students to adapt to their needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use everything that is possible to use. Study programs on the computer that they can do alone. Creative projects to make it fun for the student. It all depends on the subject.
