What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students learn differently, and that diverse teaching strategies are necessary in order for students to retain information and concepts being taught.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In my first session with a student, I would greet him or her by name, and then proceed to introduce myself and share my excitement about the opportunity to work with the student.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by first helping him to make a connection to the text or concept of focus. Next, I will model the skill and strategies for the student, and then guide him through a time of practice. After modeling and guiding, the student will have more confidence and will be more able to work independently.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I will motivate the student by continuously encouraging the student, and helping him or her to make connections to the text or content. Making connections sparks the student's interest, and keeps him engaged.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would not only re-teach the skill or concept, but I would teach it differently. For example, I would incorporate visuals (pictures, videos, slides...) as well as graphic organizers to help with comprehension.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I help students with comprehension by igniting schema (background knowledge) and helping them make connections to the text. I also use before, during, and after reading strategies that aid in helping students comprehend.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found that helping students build on their background knowledge as well as helping them make connections, to be the most successful.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would use the student's hobbies and other areas of interest to get the student excited and engaged.
