Certified Tutor

I am an intellectual, outgoing, and friendly individual. I love helping scholars find what learning style is most suitable, allowing them to succeed academically. I do not consider tutoring to be "teaching", I much rather refer to it as sharing knowledge. I find that it is important to acknowledge that learning styles vary among individuals and must be addressed when tutoring. I am currently attending Nova Southeastern University, pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. I have extensive experience in the field of education both in and out of institutions.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that, in order for teaching to be effective, it must be done in a dynamic interactive way. I also consider communication to be an essential component of the learning process. When sharing knowledge with students, I make it a point to evaluate and identify the learning style and teaching methods that would be most effective, and I implement these methods from the beginning of the session. As per Rosemarie Parse, a famous nurse theorist, I value the importance of being actively present with my students. By practicing the theory of being actively present, students do not feel disconnected or alone throughout the learning process.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would initiate my first tutoring session with a student by introducing myself and establishing a level of trust and open communication. This is important so that the student is able to communicate whether or not the methods of teaching are effective or not. I will also ask the student what their goals are for the session to make sure we are able to meet those goals together. Throughout the session, I will also make it a point to evaluate the student's style of learning and reinforce this throughout the session to facilitate learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I believe that in order for a student to become an independent learner, they must learn the organizational skills necessary to effectively study. At first, I will set up a study plan tailored to the student as an individual and slowly taper the student's dependence on my assistance to study. This process makes it a gradual process towards independence; this way the student will not feel overwhelmed.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

If a student has difficulty with a skill or concept, I would find a way to relate the concept to a skill they do understand. This way there is a sense of familiarity, increasing the chance of the student being able to understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I consider reading comprehension to be a skill that requires continuous practice and repetition. I also believe that the required skill set to effectively comprehend what is being read is often not covered in the institutional setting. I will be sure to reinforce and share these skills with the student and practice applying them to different styles of reading passages.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that the most critical strategy when working with a student is effective communication. This way the student is able to communicate flaws as well as what is working throughout the session.
