What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students have unique ways of learning, and they are able to reach higher boundaries through diverse teaching. I use the background knowledge of the students and their personal interests to make the learning experience memorable and enjoyable. Having hands-on activities is always a plus, allowing the student to feel involved in the teaching process. I believe all students are able to learn, you just have to meet them where they are and build from there.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and play interactive games that will allow myself and the student to get to know one another and build a comfortable relationship. Once we share some details and complete a few ice breakers I will begin the tutoring session.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

For a student to become an independent learner, I must give the student the keys to success that they need. Once I feel that students have mastered a topic, I show them strategies on how to study and research information on the topic to learn more on their own. That may include showing them how to navigate certain websites where they can practice, or give them articles that they can read and pull out helpful information.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would use several learning techniques (visual, audio, physical, etc.) and then I would be sure to fully understand what it is in particular that the student is confused about. Sometimes it’s just a small misunderstanding that makes something difficult. Then I will use repetition to instill the skills.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will help the student to break down the reading. I will pull out certain words, and we will discuss what they mean and how the author is using them in the writing. I will have the student underline parts of the reading that seems confusing and we will discuss each part. For certain words or phrases that the student does not understand, I will create flashcards so they can reference back to them.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I found that first creating a comfort zone and bond with the student is key. That way they will be open to asking questions and being transparent on what they don't understand. I found that giving praise is important to let the student know that their hard work is noticed and they are doing a good job.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would connect the subject to something else that they love. Once I find a way to connect the two the student will be excited to learn and do the practice activities.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use exit tickets, journal pages, quizzes, and tests to be sure that the student is retaining the information.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I document their progression, showing them their growth. I will then ask them questions that we have covered, turning it into a regular conversation, and have them realize that they are knowledgeable of the subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

After reaching a certain level, and I think the student has mastered the subject I will begin to give the student a higher level questions and activities gradually to increase their knowledge.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I learn their learning styles, talk to them, find out how they like to learn, and ask about their favorite subjects in school. Once I find these things out I will know how to teach them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use notebooks, pencils, whiteboards, markers, technology, flashcards, reading material, and manipulatives if we are working on math.
