Certified Tutor

I have always considered myself as a lifelong learner and I take pride in helping others to be excited about learning. I have a desire to help students move forward and always learn more than what they expected to learn.
I am a graduate of Christian Brothers University with a Bachelors in Chemistry and I obtained a Masters from the University of Memphis in Instruction, Curriculum and Leadership. I started working on my EDD and I plan to resume no later than January 2017. I am presently teaching Chemistry in a high school setting and have done so for 21 years. I have also privately tutored for the last 10 years. I tutor ACT, Algebra, Chemistry, and Physical Science. I enjoy tutoring ACT because that has helped many of my students and my sons who achieved good scores. I enjoy tutoring and believe that I can help students find the potential gaps that may have occurred or hinder one from moving forward or in solving problems. Outside of academics, I like to read, dance, and sing. I have had the opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall, travel, and record.. I enjoy singing Rand B, Pop, some Jazz and Blues. I still enjoy singing with professional bands and at church.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that with the right attitude and passion for teaching, I can help students enjoy learning, while promoting enthusiasm with a positive attitude. I believe that I can promote a sense of lifelong learning in every student I work with. I use strategies that allow me to work on the gaps in student learning and give students a thorough knowledge of concepts and content in a subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would typically talk with a student to listen to find out what they feel they need, and then I would administer an assessment to know where the student needs help.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Using techniques that help students become self-motivated and curious about truly comprehending with very little assistance. Help students to examine work thoroughly and to consistently push through any obstacles by motivating themselves and becoming a critical thinker.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Praise and helping them to understand that persistence, consistency, and accountability helps them to be more curious, which can help motivate because they are interested and even more responsible for their own successes.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I initially ask students to begin to read articles or books about subjects or people that interest them. I encourage reading daily, and then I also use vocabulary, context clues, and other resources and ideas to help the student progress in reading comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The strategies I use first are to assess a student, start with practice that students should know, and then move forward at a pace that is comfortable for the learner.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would use technology.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use practice problems from different sources stated differently to make sure students are understanding the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by assessing them often, and making sure that I continuously evaluate, so I can make sure I know what a student really needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring by first getting to know my student and speaking to them about what they think they need. I make an assessment, and then I monitor and adjust as needed by determining the type of learner my student is, kinesthetic, auditory, or visual.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use resources and standards for a subject - textbooks, practice tests, and technology based tests and problems. This depends on what I am tutoring.
