What is your teaching philosophy?

Love of learning is contagious.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Greet, and then get to know the student by asking for examples about how his/her day is so far.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By showing him the value of learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Through encouragement and guidance.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'd find out what the problem is, and then go from there.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I find out the cause of the struggle; if it is reading fluency for example, I will teach reading fluency skills.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Pretesting of the skill will determine if a guided practice of the skill is necessary or not; then, follow the I do, we do, they do pattern.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

My enthusiasm and relating the topic to his/ her life.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I'd ask comprehension questions.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build from easy to hard to give a chance for success.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

With a student's responses and attitude.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I provide visuals, explain concepts in small steps, and provide study guides.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Pen and paper, a laptop with Internet connection, and a textbook relevant to the lesson.
