Lance

Certified Tutor

I earned a Bachelors of Science in Physics at the University of North Texas. While attending, I tutored for the physics department and instructed labs. I tutor mainly physics and math. My favorite subject to tutor is projectile motion and the laws of kinematics. I want show the student how to learn independently. Giving them answers to problems will not help them. Besides tutoring, I enjoy activities relating to the outdoors. Thus includes camping, hiking, kayaking, canoeing and more! I also enjoy playing the guitar. Below is my promise of value:
I authentically care about the safety of others, enjoy spending quality time ensuring knowledge is communicated as efficiently and effectively as possible, and strive to protect and uphold what is ethically right. I bring a genuine perspective of faith, analytical-thinking, and mathematical logic to innovate and improve the lives of others.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My spark of passion was created when I was tutoring a particular student who was not understanding a key physics concept of conservation of energy in kinematics. Using analogies and cartoon drawings, I was able to help them grasp the concept, and a light went on in their head as they said, "Oh!" Seeing that light and their smile is priceless! I want to help more students develop that kind of joy for learning because too many students have a negative view on education. That's the change I want to see in the world! "Things do not happen. Things are made to happen." - John F. Kennedy

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself, and get to know the student and their educational history to gauge where their knowledge foundation may have holes. I would ask them to give examples of what they are having trouble with and help solidify concepts in a way they can understand.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Tutoring is much more than just giving a student the method to solve a problem. It's about leading them through the problem with a series of questions that help them figure out the method and answer independently. It's important to review the problem afterwards and ask them to walk me through the problem on their own to help solidify the concept.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

A student who needs to be tutored isn't stupid. They are very intelligent! It just takes time for them to grasp concepts. That's okay! Everyone struggles with something. And every student should know this.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would keep going backwards in levels of concepts until I found one that they do understand. Then I would help them build their knowledge foundation from there.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading out-loud very slowly and breaking down what the problem is asking is very helpful. I would have them underline segments of the sentences and pick out keywords.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I found that asking the student how they would approach a certain problem has been most successful because it helps me find where they are not understanding the problem.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would get excited about it myself! Excitement is contagious!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would actively engage the student to ensure they understand the material. I would have them briefly explain the steps to me so I know they understand.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I walk them through a problem slowly and encourage them to answer as best as they can. I never say they are wrong. I simply ask them a question to challenge their answer. When they finally get it right, I let them know what a great job they did, because they truly do a great job!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask them to walk me through a problem they are struggling with to see how they think and where they are having troubles.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If a student is a visual learner, I draw pictures. I will have auditory learners repeat the concepts. These are only a few ways that I would adapt. I am very thorough. I want to make sure the concepts are understood.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

A ream of paper, a ruler, colored pens, and a drafting pencil. Props depending on the subject.
