I hold an MA in Art History from Tufts University, where I worked as Head Teaching Assistant for the introductory Art History courses. I also have 3+ years of experience working as a museum educator in New York City and elsewhere.
I live in Providence, RI with a sweet tan dog named Nelly. In my spare time I like to bake, ride on the local bike paths, and relax with reality TV shows.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By asking questions gradually to help the student figure out the answer to the question his or herself; making sure they understand the big picture concepts.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Setting concrete goals and reflecting on progress as we meet them together.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Refer back to a similar concept they already understand; explain the differences and similarities. Draw parallels to occurrences in everyday life.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Determining their learning style - what works and what doesn't - and thinking outside the box together to find ways to meet their goals.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Ask them to write an outline of the main points we covered. Run flashcards together, if applicable to the subject matter.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I think students learn best when they're engaged and they can see how the material connects with their own lives. I love coming up with individualized strategies for teaching.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I'd ask about the student's learning style, level of comfort with the material, and related interests. I'd ask about their motivations and goals for tutoring. We'd work together to come up with a roadmap for how to achieve these goals.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I'd find ways to help them see how the material might relate to their everyday life.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By making a list of goals, and then reflecting as they are accomplished.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
First and foremost, through a conversation to determine their learning style and habits that have room for improvement. We would also review past tests and writing assignments together.
