We'll work together to make the most out of our time, and sometimes that requires appealing to our natural curiosity. Sometimes, using our creativity to find solutions can be a motivational factor that leads us to the next level of learning.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

We will definitely take all the time we need to make sure that we are appealing to your unique learning style; sometimes this involves finding new ways to see a question or subject in order to find the answers and understand the concepts we need to in order to move forward.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Comprehension depends on so many factors, including relating to the material. If we are struggling with understanding a text, chances are we need to step back and dissect it -- what is the text trying to say? We will look at it from a rhetorical analysis perspective, particularly audience, purpose, content.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Listening to the student's questions and appealing to their natural curiosity and learning style are great ways for connecting with a student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By appealing to their natural curiosity and relating the material to their life so that they see the work as developing an applicable skill.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Questions, quizzes, essays, and discussion are all methods I use to assess learning.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By giving lots of positive feedback!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By looking at the student's achievements and progress.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By making an assessment of their learning styles and goals.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on the session! But typically we'd use the student's materials in combination with some of my own.
