My philosophy is that all students deserve a differentiated instructional approach. All students should be learning their strengths and building upon those. All students do not learn the same and it is important that you are teaching to the student.

I think in the first session it is important to get to know your student and that the student gets to know you. We will probably start off with some type of get to know you game where we can become more comfortable with each other. After that we will be playing another game were I am able to pick up a few key areas where this student struggles. If time allows we will complete a short assessment. This will help me develop a plan to help the student learn at their highest potential.

Helping a student become an independent learner is the goal all teachers have. You want the students to take what you have taught them and apply it elsewhere. You really have to focus on gradual release with this concept.

It is important that a student stays motivated with their learning. Students often become unmotivated when either they are bored or unchallenged. By always keeping a fun and challenging environment, students are more likely to succeed.

If a student is having difficulty with a certain concept or skill it is important to make sure you are using this skills consistently. You want the student to be using the skills they are struggling with so they can better understand the uses. By creating fun memory rhymes, students often do really well when picking up hard concepts.

With reading comprehension it is important that you are providing the student with support. You first want to make sure the passage you are reading is at their grade level. Second you will want to give the student an outline to help them follow along and write down the main events. These two tasks should be the start of helping a student with reading comprehension.

I have found that when working with a student it is important that you are bringing in their interest. If the student is not engaged in the session then they are most likely not retaining anything. You have to make learning fun. You also want to bring in the student's learning abilities and multiple intelligences. Every student is different, and therefore you should have a different plan for each student.

By bringing in things that interest them. So for example, if a student is struggling in reading but really enjoys sports, then bringing in reading material about sports and gearing your games and worksheets to that, often times, helps with engagement.

You have to make sure you are assessing a student. So my using both formative and summative assessment, as well as a variety in each, is important.

Positive reinforcement is always a good thing. Teachers or tutors really want to uplift a student and not just show them what they cannot do but also point out the great things they can do. It also is important to show the student how they have improved and give them feedback to continue learning.

By doing pre-assessments it allows a tutor or teacher to gain an understanding of the different areas a student might struggle.

You have to incorporate a student's learning abilities, but also their strengths. You want to include their multiple intelligences such as visual, auditory, or verbal.
