From the time that I was in grade school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. My first experience with teaching was showing my younger sister how to multiply and divide. I studied elementary education at the University of Houston and graduated in 2012. I am also a certified teacher for Pre-Kindergarten through siSixth Grade. Now I am a 4 year veteran teacher! I have been teaching in the elementary level for 4 years in an urban environment. Most of the students that I have worked with have been at least 1 grade level behind. One of my goals as a teacher is to ensure the success of my students regardless of how far behind they are. I have also worked with students that are gifted and talented and need enrichment included in their learning experiences. I can't wait to begin working to provide additional support and learning for students!

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that every child can succeed if given the tools and opportunity. I am here to be a tool and opportunity for a child to reach their personal level of success!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In the first session with a student, I will take the time to get to know the student and what their expectations are for our time together.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will help students become independent learners by helping them create a personal tool kit that can be used whenever they need support.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I will help a student stay motivated by giving them short simple goals that grow over time. It's encouraging to be able to meet and surpass your goals!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
When a student has difficulty learning, I will break apart the skill or concept and start from the beginning. Let's figure out where the student is struggling and build a new understanding.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
The number one way to help a child that is struggling with reading comprehension is to build interest in reading! I will help the child find something that interests them, and then use that to support their comprehension skills.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The most successful strategy I have found when working with a student is giving them the opportunity to explain how they feel about their learning. Giving the students the chance to show ownership of their learning creates a platform for future learning.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I will help a child find excitement in a difficult subject area by giving them different learning experiences based on their interests.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Throughout the learning experience, I will check for understanding through questioning, teach backs, and mini assessments.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I will build a student's confidence by helping them reach short, sweet goals that grow over time.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I will evaluate a student’s needs by looking at their scores, listening to their concerns, and reflecting on my experiences while tutoring.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my tutoring for a student based on their achievement during lessons or assessments. I will also listen for the student's ability to teach back material in their own words.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The materials I like to use during tutoring are white boards, manipulatives, interactive programs, and old fashioned pencil and paper.
