What is your teaching philosophy?

A teacher should help a student breakdown a topic they are struggling with into smaller ideas. This makes it easy to present these small ideas in a way that will help the student understand and learn.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

In my experience, I have found that being able to approach a problem multiple ways. For example, factoring a quadratic equation to find the zeros and then being able to find a quadratic equation with specific zeros.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student's interests and where they are in the subject matter. That way you can attempt to incorporate their interests into the learning.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper, a textbook and a calculator.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Connect their interests into the material they need to learn, such that they begin to develop those skills normally during a day.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break the concept into base components that are easier to understand, and approach them from new angles.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start with a subject from the base and take steps forward at the student's pace to get to the difficult material.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

A series of questions focused on the topic that is being covered. This allows for a basis of knowing what concepts need to be covered in detail and what concepts are well understood by the student.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

All of tutoring should revolve around the students’ needs. Nearly all students have questions or difficulty understanding material. The tutor is expected to attempt to rephrase or re-approach this material in such a way the student will understand.
