What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that calm and courteous explanation of concepts with gentle repetition is very effective.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would get to know what type of learner they are and what particular mental blocks they may have towards learning. That will help me know better how to approach topics with them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Everyone can learn to pursue skills independently. It's all about fostering an interest and helping students take ownership over their own learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By helping students fully understand and grow to appreciate the material they're learning as opposed to merely learning it for a test.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Approaching a problem in many different ways helps me grasp a student's learning style.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Focus in on the portion of the passage that you're supposed to deal with. Ignore the outside noise.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know the way that the student learns - each student learns differently, and that has to be honored and appreciated.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Once a student feels like they're starting to take ownership over their own learning and see themselves starting to improve, a switch goes off and they start to appreciate what they're learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

A lot of repetition, and asking the student to explain the topic on their own without my help.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student will always be more confident once he/she feels he/she can teach the subject to someone else.
