Certified Tutor

Hello students! I'm a recently matched Anesthesiology resident at BU Medical Center looking to help out any aspiring physicians or anyone who just needs some help with their science work. I grew up outside of Boston in Concord-Carlisle where I attended The Middlesex School and afterwards headed up to Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME where I was captain of the men's varsity soccer team and received my BA in Biology. After college I wound up working in specialty finance and healthcare investment banking for a number of years before eventually deciding to go to medical school which I just completed this year.

In medical school I was a TA in multiple subjects including Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Neurology so I have a fair amount of experience teaching and working with students. Having worked at high end financial firms as well as going through the medical school application process I would be more than happy to review resumes and applications with you as well or simply discuss what to expect if you're interested in either field.

Outside of my academic interests I'd say I'm a very laid-back and friendly guy. I've played soccer and hockey my entire life and am an accomplished skier and surfer as well. I was an Art minor in college and like to draw and play guitar; not to mention the fact that I can quote pretty much any funny movie ever.

I believe that anyone can learn any material; it just needs to be presented in an engaging fashion. We all tend to do better in the subjects that we enjoy but unfortunately we can't love everything; so it'll be my job to make the experience as likable as possible. I'm a people person which is one of the reasons I chose Anesthesiology as a specialty. It requires the ability to make a stranger comfortable with you as a person and confident in your skills as a professional in a very short period of time; something I'm luckily very good at.

If you're looking for a tutor who is smart and driven as well as fun and friendly I'm your guy. We can cover everything from basic Biology concepts to advanced human Anatomy and Physiology and everything in between. Thanks and I look forward to working with you!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that anyone can learn any material; it just needs to be presented in an engaging fashion. We all tend to do better in the subjects that we enjoy, but unfortunately we can't love everything; so it'll be my job to make the experience as likable as possible. Being a visual learner myself, I personally find visual aids helpful and like to draw out problems on a white board or notebook to introduce or reinforce concepts to students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I feel like a first session is all about getting to know a student's personality and learning style. What works for one person doesn't necessarily work for another, and your teaching style and manner of interaction has to be student specific. Starting to form a friendship I believe is also very important, because it fosters the kind of environment ideal for learning. If you don't like your tutor, how are you supposed to be motivated to learn from them?

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Becoming an independent learner is clearly an important end goal to any tutoring experience. What we are trying to do is give you the tools to succeed on your own, which I believe is rooted in self-confidence. Over the sessions you will slowly gain confidence through completing assignments, scoring well on exams, and coming to the realization that you can master the concepts that you felt were once so daunting. At the same time, you'll know that if you falter or need a helping hand, that your tutor will be there for you.
