What is your teaching philosophy?
No need for cramming formulas and procedures. If you understand the material well, you will understand the process and consequently the answer.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce myself and make them comfortable. Then assess to see how much they know already
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Help them discover what study method works best for them and encourage them to practice on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Send motivational texts/messages (with permission of course), as well as occasional rewards for work well done.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Explain in as many different ways possible, using analogies and examples as much as possible. Also, practice.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Practice, practice, relax, take a step back, and go back to it. It might help your understanding of the article/passage.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Let them tell you what they have problems with the most. Over the duration of the tutoring, helping them with said issues and pointing out other things along the way that needs to be worked on.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
View from as many different perspectives as you can until you find one that interests you. Then take that approach.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Study, review, quiz and repeat.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Have them teach you what they know so far. It helps them really identify what they know and solidify such knowledge. If successful they become more confident in that area.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By finding what it is they are most scared of. That is usually where the problem is.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I let each individual student feel in control of what is being taught, so my tutoring ultimately depends on the student.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Questions from books they are familiar with and have probably come across before. Occasionally questions I invent on my own.
