Nick

Certified Tutor

I enjoy learning, and helping others learn. I am a results driven tutor who has been helping students in Math and Science since 2009. All the students I have helped have improved by at least a full letter grade. I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Physics and a specialization in Robotics and I passed the FE exam in September of 2018. I understand that not all students are able to learn the same way and I try to adapt my teaching methods to better suit the student. I have tutoring experience in math from Pre-Algebra through Calculus 2, high school and college Physics, and engineering sciences associated with a Mechanical Engineering degree (i.e. Solid Mechanics, Statics, Dynamics, Machine Design, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, etc.). I am bilingual, able to speak English and Spanish.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that any student that wants to learn and can learn. I will always do my best to approach problems from a standpoint that the student will understand best.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would ask them to tell me which topic they are currently on and where they feel they need help, and move forward from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help them become an independent learner by teaching them how to approach different types of problems and how to better understand the information in their textbooks, because it is not always presented clearly.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help them stay motivated by showing them how much progress they can make and by trying to show them what they can achieve when they make said progress. That way they understand that they will be helping to set themselves up for a better future.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try and approach it from a more basic or generally different standpoint that they may better understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I tutor in Mathematics, but when a textbook is not easy to understand, I try to help students by breaking down the concepts and teaching them how to pull information from the textbook that may be presented in a difficult to understand manner.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that every student is different, but it is very important for them to understand that mistakes shouldn't be discouraging. Mistakes are a great learning experience. Positive reinforcement is the best approach in my experience.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help students get engaged with a subject they are struggling in by teaching them some real life applications of the material.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would perform a short pre-test to see what they understand before the lesson, and a short post-test to see if they have learned the material in the session.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build a student's confidence in a subject by giving them exercises they can understand, gradually giving them more challenging exercises to work on.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by asking which topic they are on in class, which topics they feel they need help in, and testing them on material leading up to and including the material they are on in class or having trouble with.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by working at the student's pace and starting with fundamental concepts.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

During a tutoring session I typically use a pencil, some sheets of paper, the student's textbook, and a calculator.
