There are many learning styles that students can have. Learning with your learning style is very important to understanding material. There are also many ways to learn a skill. Some methods will work for some people while others can understand a new task a different way. If the method that you are using to solve a problem is not working, you should try another one.

The first session would primary be finding your weak points that will need to be worked on. Also, we will try to find out your leaning style.

The main way to become an independent learner is learning organizational skills to help with keeping up with studying. I can teach basic organization skills to help stay organized. The most important part of becoming an independent learner though is a love of learning. I will do my best to show you that learning new things can be fun!

If a student is having difficulty learning a new skill or concept; the best way to help is to use a different method of teaching.

Finding a student’s weaknesses in a subject and focus on them. The best way to master a new skill is lots of repetition.

I have found the best way to keep a student engaged with a subject is to have them do the majority of the work and give suggestions or show them how a problem is worked out if they are having problems.

I like using other problems that I find on the internet or come up with myself and have students solve them. If they can solve the problems without any help, they understand.

The best way to gain confidence is success. When a student finds that they now understand and are mastering a subject, they gain confidence in the subject.

I ask questions to see how they are keeping up with their homework and studying. If they are struggling with a skill, I will focus on that need. I also like to ask if they have trouble with organizing in general. Trouble organizing usually leads to issues with setting aside time to study and do homework.

My tutoring style is very fluid. Each student is unique with different needs. Some students learn differently from others. Some students like to see how things are put together. Some other students like to be told how a problem is solved. My teaching style changes depending on the student. Some students need help with different skills than others. I adjust the focus of my teaching to focus on a student’s weak points in a subject.

The type of materials I use depend on the skills that I'm focusing on during a session. The most important piece of materials is the book that the student is working out of. The second most important is lots of paper. The type of materials I use also depends on what I’m teaching. With arithmetic, I like bringing counting blocks. With algebra and math, I like to bring graph paper as well as a calculator. Sometimes counting blocks help with teaching students the very basics of algebra.
