Certified Tutor

I enjoy teaching and working with students of all levels (grammar school, high school, college, and graduate level). I like to meet each student with where they are at and to find out the challenges they're experiencing with the subject matter and how we can work together to help them to retain and understand the information.

I am a doctor, and like to understand where each student is coming from and how I can best help them with their study skills. What I love about tutoring is seeing the students understand and grasp the material and do well on their tests.

While in medical school, I tutored in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, clinical analysis and case review, embryology, and microbiology. I recently taught Physical Examination and Clinical Assessment classes at the University of Bridgeport tutored the medical students in various clinical classes. I also helped the students to prepare for their clinical entry exams, promotion exams, and clinical exit exams.

I also currently tutor Honors biology. I am comfortable tutoring Biology, Anatomy, Microbiology, Physiology, Nutrition, Pharmacology, and Science. I completed pharmacology courses throughout my medical school program and received all A's and one B. I was also tested heavily on my clinical boards for pharmacology and passed as a licensed physician.

I am easy to work with and like to build connections with each student. I enjoy finding out what motivates each student and how we can work together.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to meet each student where they are at, understand what motivates them, and what kind of learner they are (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic). I also make it a point to understand the material and apply it instead of relying on memorization. It's important also to understand what motivates each student and what their expectations are from each session.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A typical first session is meeting each student, understanding where they are at, what challenges they are experiencing and figuring out the best way to work with them. Is it a conceptual issue or mechanical issue? Then, breaking down each concept so that it's easier to understand it and to apply it moving forward.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by providing them with guidance, positive reinforcement, and resources to help them. It can also be helpful to go over a lesson before it's taught in class, as repetition is key.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I will help students stay motivated by understanding what motivates them - besides a good grade! Each day is a new day to learn and understand new concepts, and the goal is to help them become a better student, which will help them moving forward, whether that's in grammar school, high school, college, graduate school...

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I like to use as many resources as I can to break down the concept. Visualization always helps me understand a concept, so I find that drawing it out and understanding the mechanism is key. Making flash cards are great too - it's what helped me get through medical school!
