I graduated from Oglethorpe University with a degree in economics. Oglethorpe is a liberal arts institution and I have an interest in writing, history and politics as well as economics. I worked as an AmeriCorps VISTA and at the Carter Center. Currently, I'm working for a State Representative in Atlanta, GA. I played baseball in college and still try to play when I can.
I'm here to help as much as possible. Learning new subjects can be difficult and my goal is to have a fun and relaxed environment to do it in. I'm open to any questions whether about school, applying to college, or anything else. If you have any questions, let me know!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I enjoy working through problems with students and learning with them. The goal is to teach in a relaxed and fun environment.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session I ask the student to introduce themselves and get to know them. It is important to know their background as well as the questions they need help with.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teaching how to study a subject is essential to helping a student become an independent learner.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
If a student is frustrated or unmotivated, we can take a short break from the work and talk about something unrelated. It helps to remind students of the end goal of why we are working, and how much they have learned already.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student is having difficulty with a skill or concept I try to relate it to their everyday life in an easy to understand example. Relating the work to real life situations makes understanding complex concepts easier.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
When struggling with reading comprehension, a student should use a highlighter to mark important passages and break the reading into pieces. After finishing a piece of the reading, it helps for the student to go back and review what they highlighted and then take notes on the main ideas.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The most successful strategy when starting to work with a student is getting to know them and understanding what they need help with. Often times it is not the material but the study structure that can help a student excel the most.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Enthusiasm for a subject can make it more fun when the student is struggling. It also helps to relate it to their everyday life so they can see how it might be applicable.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Informally quizzing the student and asking questions ensures the student understands the material. Taking a few minutes to review the material we covered is important.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Confidence in a subject is built through success. Promoting "ah-ha" moments in the lesson by asking questions and not simply giving the answers gives students a sense of mastery in the material and assists in the learning process.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
To evaluate a student's needs I ask them questions to understand their baseline knowledge for the material. I then clarify what they need to learn and what the purpose of it is.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Students have different needs, and it helps to establish a dialogue in order to identify those needs.
