I graduated this Spring from Duke University and I'm in the process of applying to Master's programs for marine biology. I've been a motivated and committed student for the past 15+ years and I'm excited to bring my knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion for learning and teaching to all of my tutoring sessions. Although I majored in Biology at Duke, I got a minor in Classical Studies - or ancient Greece and Rome - so I have a pretty diverse educational background. In addition to my studies in college, I was DUMB (a proud member of the Duke University Marching Band) and I conducted research on Hawaiian monk seals. In the future, I hope to participate in more field work with marine mammals and eventually become a professor, so I look forward to incorporating tutoring into my educational track!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy focuses on flexibility: everyone learns differently, and I embrace that!

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Motivation can be challenging to maintain if you have nothing to be motivated for. Looking forward and finding goals that relate to the present studies is a great way to boost motivation.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First, I would backtrack to make sure the student understands the concepts leading up to what he or she is finding difficult. After that, approaching the concept from a new or different perspective often can clear things up.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would place the subject in the context of its real world applications. A subject can be more exciting and engaging if it goes beyond just the textbook.
