Certified Tutor

Hello Students, Families, and Friends:

As a certified teacher, I have worked in a very diverse capacity for many years. I was an International Teacher in China, and I have served as a College Advisor in both China and currently, in the US. Along with working with children of 11+ nationalities, over the past decade, I have continuously been a tutor. I have experience tutoring everything from Elementary Math, Reading, and Writing to TOEFL and SAT preparation. My students have been in every grade level, beginning with 1st grade, and I've had an exceptional time learning how to tailor my lessons based on their ages, personalities, and learning types.

With additional help from my degrees in Sociology and Psychology, I was also able to receive my Multiple Intelligence and TOEFL certifications. The Multiple Intelligence certificate truly helped me and my students become accustomed to how their unique type of learning and intelligence can work towards their benefit in subjects they may find difficult or "boring".

I have also undergone the Princeton Review course for the SAT and have been an observer for both the PSAT and SAT exams.

Lastly, I have really enjoyed working with my students who have special needs because they have allowed me to gain so much from their unique abilities and have challenged me in all the right ways over the years. My special needs experiences are in: Autism, Asperger's, ADHD, ADD, and dyslexia.

I hope I am able to continue helping a wide range of students from a wide range of grades, ages, backgrounds, and experiences through 51Թ.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student is unique, and it is our job as educators to accommodate accordingly.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During my first session with a student, I would spend at least ten minutes getting to know the student - what they enjoy, what subjects they struggle in, and which ones they like. I would also try to assess their level of overall confidence and their personality through their responses. During our first session, I also give students and parents the option to ask me any questions they may have for me.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can assist a student to become an independent learner by teaching them certain skills that would make them curious to find the answers to questions by themselves.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Students are just like adults, positive reinforcement and sometimes some extra energy in a relaxed way helps a student stay motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Assess what it is about that skill/concept that is actually difficult for them. It could be the fact that the skill involves lots of imagery or it only involves listening, and that could actually be the problem rather than the actual concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Practice! When it comes to reading, there is no better help than reading. We would do oral reading, improve vocabulary skills, and we'd breakdown passages section by section so that I can ask them questions as we read along. I'd train them to think in this way when they are reading without me too.
