Learning is a vital activity which brings much growth and fulfillment to a person's life. As an educator for 10 years now, I have acquired knowledge about how people learn and how to adapt to various learning styles. I received my Bachelors of Science in Education in 2005. My experience has been in the elementary classroom, tutoring one-on-one and in small groups as well as educating my own children. I have worked with students from K-12; however, most of my experience is with elementary students. I believe that there is hidden potential in each person. The joy I have as an educator is in helping my students unlock their potential which will lead them down a path they were designed for. In this process, I'm thankful to learn so much from my students as well! One-on-one tutoring is a major key which helps many students see their abilities. I hope to play a part in uncovering difficult areas of learning for my students. In my free time, I enjoy crafting, baking, spending time with my family and learning how to become a blogger.

What is your teaching philosophy?

The best education comes when there is a respect between teacher and student. After that, learning might have its difficult moments, but the respect gained will help push the learning process forward until achieved results are found.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would share a couple of fun facts about myself and then find out a couple of fun facts about the student. Also, I like to ask what the student's favorite subject is and what their least favorite subject is as an indicator to see what growth was like towards the end of a tutoring period.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students become independent learners when they learn to discover and uncover answers alone. It is also important that a student has an encouraging, lifelong learning teacher/mentor as well.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Work to pinpoint where the struggle area is and work from there.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

A student needs to build his/her confidence first. To do this, it is good to have student reading a topic that interests them.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Learning a student's interests, their hobbies ,and just letting the student know that, as the tutor, I am there to help them find confidence so that they can move forward, even in small steps.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Remind the student that small steps forward are more important than the big picture. We don't have to move forward until I notice a change in understanding, and the student begins performing better on a skill or subject.
