I am a firm believer that Attitude is indeed Everything! My teaching philosophy lies in finding the diamond in the rock in order to make learning fun. If the thought of writing Essays traumatizes students, or if they are overwhelmed by the complex rules of Writing, Grammar, or Reading comprehension, I can help them to master those skills, all while enjoying the journey! I can also walk students through the Critical Writing process by developing a thesis statement to completing the final draft. My goal is to help students discover the joy of Language Arts. I earned a B.A. in English with a Specialization in Creative Writing from Southern Methodist University and a J.D. degree from Florida Coastal School of Law. I have tutored students for over 8 years from K5 through 12 grade primarily in Language Arts, and my specialty lies in the Creative Writing process. I have been writing personally for over 20 years, and my hobbies are dancing, reading fiction novels, and watching comedy on TV. I am a mentor and a motivator, and I enjoy nothing more than helping students to conquer their fears of learning.

What is your teaching philosophy?
To master any subject, one must first discover the gem that lies deep inside of it.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
A first session begins with not just discovering the goals, but uncovering the fears.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
An independent learner can only be developed through first becoming a confident learner.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Motivation is maintained through the knowledge that you are the master of your fears and the driver of your success.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will help them to discover the benefit of the skill itself, and then link the personal benefit that it brings to the student.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reading comprehension is improved by discovering and exploring the multiple sub-parts, and understanding their purpose to the reading as a whole. This is the critical reading process.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
My strategy in working with all students is to first discover their personality and style of learning, and then to proceed with that individualized approach.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
A student can only become engaged in a subject that they are struggling in by first understanding the personalized benefit that it can bring them.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Understanding of material can be tested by allowing the student to apply what they have learned by explaining it with their own understanding of what they were taught.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
A student's confidence in a subject can be built by repetition of successfully completing that particular goal on their own.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by listening to their stated goals, and also by asking questions to gain an understanding of their general knowledge of the subject that they are struggling in.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt to the student's tutoring needs by understanding their expectations of me, and then developing an agreeable plan that fits those needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Every tutoring session has individualized materials that are prepared in accordance with the goals of the student.
