I specialize in test prep (MCAT, LSAT, SAT, etc.), but am equally motivated to tutor in the variety of subjects listed in my profile. After leaving a promising career as an associate at one of the world's most profitable law firms, I am now applying to medical school and working with children and teens as a part-time clinical research associate and patient educator in the field of pediatric asthma at a prestigious academic medical center. Oh, have I mentioned yet that I have discovered the keys to all-around academic improvement?
Ok, I'm still a recovering lawyer, so that statement comes with caveats. The skills you need require hard work to develop and the right person to help you cultivate them. I know the material in every area I offer my services and can teach you such material like any other tutor. What makes me unique is my use of whatever subject I'm teaching to foster your capability to learn on your own in the future, to develop abilities that are transferable to any academic subject and even to future careers. Such abilities include:
(i) Recognizing relevant issues and facts presented alongside irrelevant ones;
(ii) Analyzing potential consequences of changes to complex systems in equilibrium,
(iii) Distilling principles from one set of circumstances and understanding how, and when it is appropriate, to apply them to a different set; and
(iv) Being able to clearly justify the basis for any conclusion made.
It happens to be that those are the exact abilities I myself developed in Harvard Law School and as a lawyer. It may sound a bit abstract to you right now, but it works. I recently talked about my approach to a tenured science professor at Columbia University, telling her that I thought those skills had helped me tremendously to succeed in her infamously difficult class. Her response, "It sounds as if you have your finger on the right issues."
I can't guarantee A's or perfect test scores. But with your hard work, I can improve your understanding of the subject matter in which you're looking for help while also building skills that will serve you long after our sessions are complete. I also like to have fun while I work!
