Tutoring review by Joe in Sugar Hill, GA
At this session, we reviewed polynomial functions. The student in particular had questions regarding "holes" in polynomial ratios. We went through the conceptual meaning of these "holes" and then that some practice problems so that he could see how they work out in the material. We then did some drills to help him derive and recognize oblique asymptotes. The drills also contained some questions pertinent to horizontal and vertical asymptotes. I left him with a review sheet that contain information pertaining to these topics. The student feels like he is doing well in school.

The student and I, at the request of his parents, spent most of our sessions working on an essay he has to write for acceptance into his high school. The prompt was to write about something that fascinated him or caused him to change his mind about something, so we talked about the kinds of things that most interested him. He indicated to me that enjoys learning about "differences," so I had him make a list of as many kinds of differences that he would be interested in learning about. I had him pick one and then write about it so that he could go back through it and develop it into his full essay. We finished by reviewing his homework, and I suggested a video for him to watch that supplemented information he was learning about the Louisiana Purchase.

The student and I went over fractions and word problems during this session. I wrote out the problems for her to work on. For the fractions; we did subtraction, addition and converting to mixed numbers. She did great with these questions and knew the methods. With the word problems on calculating time, she needed a little more help at the beginning. After explaining some tricks with telling time and hours, she completed the questions confidently.

During this session, we finished the remaining 4 lab reports for the course, including redox reactions, electrochemistry, and organic chemistry. The student was able to do most of the procedures before the session, which helped our efficiency in making it through the material. Now, our focus will be on the student's final four quizzes and two exams. Next session, we plan to review material for the remaining two exams (and associated quizzes).

Tutoring review by Michael in Sugar Hill, GA
Today we started, as we always do, with a grade check. His lowest grade is a 76 in science. He indicated to me that he has difficulty with the tests, although the homework and labs are fine. We first went over the verbs SER and GUSTAR in Spanish. We went over the conjugations and how to use gustar properly with the reflexive verbs attached to it at the beginning. We talked about how the pronoun refers to who is doing the liking and you use gusta when talking about one thing, and gustan when talking about more than one thing. I made a chart so he could visually see how it works, and then gave him a mini quiz to see if he could do it on his own, which he could. I was very impressed with his ability to take a concept, learn it, and apply it to a new situation so quickly. The next thing we worked on was his English vocabulary list, which he has a test on Friday. We went over the words, definitions, and parts of speech a number of times, but what really helped him was relating each vocabulary word to something that he knew in his life (maleficent - Darth Vader). That helped him remember the words and definitions better the last time we went through them. We then reviewed some math homework that he had dealing with equations with inequalities. He did well with those and just needed some help with graphing the inequalities. We also talked about his reading book for English, The Odyssey. He told me that it is difficult to read as it is written in the style of a long poem and with words he may not be familiar with. I gave him a link to a site with notes on the Odyssey so he can read the summaries and analysis to help his comprehension. He was willing to do whatever was needed to do complete his homework. He asked great questions and readily accepted any challenge or quiz I threw at him. Great job!

Tutoring review by Ian in Sugar Hill, GA
We began session with the student's weekly reading prep, this time targeting humanities and natural science passages. Despite decreased active guidance, he is holding steady in both pacing and accuracy with the section (the science-related passage remaining his strongest). Afterward, we concluded our unit on the writing section by reviewing the body paragraph he outlined for homework. All necessary parts of the evaluation and overall argument were present; my input was limited to suggestions on phrasing and transitions. We practiced developing a topic sentence for each section of the outline; as long as he has a solid outline to work from, I don't anticipate him having a problem organizing and introducing his topics properly. I briefly conferenced with the client family on next steps leading up to the December test, and the student agreed to schedule time for a full-length practice test before our next meeting.
