Tutoring review by Margaret in Northfield, NJ
I am working with the student on going over her homework assignments in-depth. She is starting to work with angles and geometry so we did some extra practice problems in that area as well as a reading comprehension exercise and some drill addition and subtraction math problems. The student is continuing to maintain good focus and defend her reasoning for arriving at her answers. We will keep practicing learned material for good reinforcement and work on the new material as she practices it in her homework assignments!

Tutoring review by Amanda in Northfield, NJ
The student and I started our lesson with a free-writing exercise and corrected it for grammatical errors. He then started working on a state grade 4 math assessment, which covers all areas of math that a student leaving 4th grade and entering 5th grade should have mastered. He breezed through basic arithmetic and simple word problems, but he was more perplexed by multiple step word problems, so we worked through those together and will practice more of those types of problems at our next meeting. We finished the lesson with another short writing exercise, which we corrected for grammatical errors.

Tutoring review by Yemi in Northfield, NJ
We continued the same format as last time. The student emailed me the paper that he had to read and answer questions about. I informed him beforehand that it is best for him to read the paper to understand the big picture and not try to understand all the details in the article. Before we went into the questions I explained a little bit about molecular biology, since the article was discussing gene activation. The student struggled to find the best words to explain his answer. Sometimes it seemed like he didn't have confidence in himself, so I would encourage him that he was on the right track. Although it was a difficult paper to dissect with minimal biology experience, he did a great job at trying to find the main points of the paper.

Tutoring review by Amy in Northfield, NJ
The student had a test the next day so we spent our time reviewing. We worked on the passe compose and imparfait verb forms, vocabulary around camping and vacation, and reflexive verbs. Overall, she did very well. I reminded her that in the past tense, reflexive verbs always use "etre" and must agree with the subject. We reviewed the past participle of some of the irregular verbs. At the end of the session her mother requested that we work more on pronunciation, so next time I will have her repeat more of the phrases instead of me reading them for her. I also recommended she create a sheet with "etre" and "avoir" conjugated since they are the two most commonly used verbs.

Tutoring review by Christine in Northfield, NJ
We spent the majority of the session on calculus. We went through the product and quotient rules, which the student knew how to use without any assistance. We spent a lot of time talking about simple harmonic motion, both in terms of calculus (comparing the graphs of the derivatives) and physics (is the block on a spring accelerating / what direction is the velocity / how do you know?). The student is doing a great job relating physics and calculus concepts. We ended the session by looking at last year's AP free response questions and talking through the ones that he already knows how to do.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Northfield, NJ
During this session, we focused on using the first and second derivatives of a function to find where the function is increasing or decreasing; what the function's concavity is; and where the function has local maxima, minima, or inflection points. We also discussed how to use the graph of the derivative of a function to find the above information and to create a rough sketch of the original graph. By the end of the session, the student seemed much more comfortable with which functions are used at which points of this process and was prepared to tackle the remainder of his homework assignment.
