What is on the New Mexico bar exam?
The New Mexico bar exam is a test that you need to take before getting your law degree. You do not need an ABA-Approved Law School J.D. to take the New Mexico bar exam. Application fees are $500 or $1000 for both attorneys and non-attorneys (late filing and other fees may apply). There is a $100 fee for laptops (if permitted) and for repeat takers.
In New Mexico, the NCBE has adopted the Uniform Bar Examination, or UBE. The minimum passing score on the UBE to pass the bar exam in New Mexico is 260. Your UBE score can be transferred, but it must not be more than 36 months old. The UBE consists of the three tests mentioned below, and it results in a total portable score that can be transferred to and from other jurisdictions that have adopted the UBE.
The New Mexico bar examination has several parts. It includes the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), and Multistate Performance Test (MPT). Scores on the MBE can not be transferred. The MPRE, or Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination, is also required, with a minimum passing score of 80.
The purpose of the MBE is to assess the extent to which an examinee can apply fundamental legal principles and legal reasoning to analyze given fact patterns. The MEE has six 30-minute questions. Among others, it tests your ability to identify legal issues raised by a hypothetical situation and separate material that is relevant from material that isn't.
The MPT has two 90-minute items. Its purpose is designed to test an examinee's ability to use fundamental lawyering skills in a realistic situation and complete a task that a beginning lawyer should be able to accomplish. Instead of focusing on hard knowledge, it is designed to assess fundamental skills that lawyers need to have regardless of which area of law they are focusing on.
In addition to all of the above exams, you will have to pass a character and fitness investigation. These investigations are provided by the NCBE for both attorneys and those who are applying with transferred UBE scores. You can apply for this investigation online, after which a checklist will be mailed to you. The character report in New Mexico has its own fee schedule, and you can contact the NCBE about it.
