St. Louis Latin Tutoring FAQ

Reach out to 51勛圖厙, and let us find a qualified St. Louis Latin tutor for you or a student in your family. If you're taking a Latin class or learning the language on your own, it's great to get the support of a professional instructor who can help you better understand foundational and advanced concepts. No matter your reason for seeking assistance, St. Louis Latin tutors can help you pursue the level of language proficiency you desire.

How can a St. Louis Latin tutor near me help me improve my Latin language skills?

Latin is considered a relatively easy language to learn for native English speakers, largely because many English words originate from Latin. You could have noticed similarities between Latin and English words like "adulescens" and "adolescent" or "rapidus" and "rapid." Even though Latin is considered a "dead" language because it no longer represents the spoken language of any community, it still exists in certain spaces. If you are a professional who works in the legal, medical, or scientific fields, you could benefit from learning Latin to translate texts. Whether you are looking to advance your career or simply want to learn the language as an entry point into Romance languages like Italian, Spanish, or French, St. Louis Latin tutoring can get you on the right track.

The ability to interact with your personal instructor one-on-one is one of the many reasons working with St. Louis Latin tutors is special. You are your educator's one and only focus. With this level of individualized attention, your teacher has the time to find out all about your learning style and goals as a Latin student. If you want to stay on top of specific objectives in a Latin class or have personal language-learning goals you would like to meet, your academic mentor can help. By creating a comprehensive lesson plan, you can always have new goals to pursue. Your educator can keep track of the goals you've met and continue to set new objectives to help you continuously grow as a student.

There are many aspects of the Latin language you can go over with your academic mentor. If you are in the early stages of learning Latin, your teacher could present Latin history and facts about the structure of the language. For instance, much of the meaning behind Latin sentences is determined by the use of inflections, or the endings of words. Unlike English sentences that rely on the order of words to determine their meaning, inflections in Latin help determine how words relate to one another. Your St. Louis Latin tutor can spend time helping you grasp this concept and also go over verbs, which typically have no need for a pronoun. Also, you can learn more about how the ending of a verb shows who is carrying out an action.

In an effort to build your knowledge of Latin, your personal instructor can use a variety of teaching methodologies until those that work best are discovered. For instance, if you or your student is a physical learner, the educator could utilize tangible objects to help retain the meaning of essential vocabulary words. On the other hand, if you are more of an aural learner, your teacher could use short lectures to discuss how to make sure adjectives in Latin agree in gender and number with the nouns they describe. Your academic mentor could also provide you with written exercises to help you practice your grammar and sentence structure.

Additionally, your educator can offer continuous feedback so you don't develop any bad habits in written or spoken Latin. You can also enjoy instant answers to any questions you have during your sessions. Your teacher can help motivate you to build your Latin language skills at your own pace by setting small, achievable goals you can accomplish little by little. Your teacher can also serve as your biggest cheerleader, helping you feel more confident in your ability to excel as a Latin speaker.

If you prefer in-person tutoring, you can work with your teacher in any location you desire. Let us know your schedule and preferred setting. We can find an educator who can meet you at your home, office, or even a quiet public setting like the Richmond Heights Memorial Library.

Recent St. Louis Latin Tutoring Session Notes

Latin Tutoring review by Andrew in St. Louis, MO
This week, we did some review for the exam the student is having in class on Friday and Monday. So, we started out reviewing the sample sentences from the class lesson on pronouns, giving us the chance to practice the pronouns (which she knows well) and also just translating sentences in general. We spent a good chunk of the session practicing the conjugations of sum and possum, as well as the formation of the ablative absolute. She did well with possum, after getting straight how it is related to the forms of sum, and I think the ablative absolute made sense to her.

Latin Tutoring review by Daniel in St. Louis, MO
The student and I covered nouns and adjectives today. We went over four different word groups and elaborated on how to decline them in each case both in singular and plural. We did this for manus malus, magnum cor, pater noster, and acies nova. She seems much more comfortable with nouns and adjectives than she is with verbs. I told her to review her verbs again to make sure she knows them well. She told me she got a 95% on her chemistry exam, for which I helped her study last week.

Latin Tutoring review by Scott in St. Louis, MO
The student and I began this session with declension exercises. We discussed the first three of the five Latin declensions. I outlined each declension and then had her practice writing each one. As we practiced declining, she demonstrated great progress. She has improved every time we practice declining or conjugating. After discussing declensions, I introduced two irregular verb conjugations that she would use for class. We ended the session by translating a passage for her homework assignment. I showed her various techniques that would help her tackle translating different passages.

Latin Tutoring review by Hannah in St. Louis, MO
In our session, the student and I worked through three prose composition sentences. For each sentence, I asked him first to identify the verbs and then to look up unfamiliar vocabulary. I directed him to use the back of his textbook as it contains both Latin-to-English and English-to-Latin vocabulary and definitions. However, I recommended that he purchase a Latin-English dictionary as it will provide more complete definitions with information about syntax that will help him in both translation and prose composition. After we looked up all unfamiliar vocabulary words, I asked him to identify the person, number, and tense of the verbs in the English sentence as this information determines what endings the verbs will have in Latin. After determining the correct Latin verb forms, I asked him to identify the case and number of the nouns in the English sentence as this information determines what endings the nouns will have in Latin. Once he gathered this information, we pieced together a Latin translation for each sentence. He improved at identifying the third principle part of a verb as the stem for building the perfect and pluperfect tenses.
