Hi! My name is Hasan, and I'm an honors student studying Biomedical Engineering with a focus in Biocomputing and Engineering Leadership at Marquette University. Tutoring is one of my favorite things to do! I've tutored first-grade students, college students, and everyone in between in a variety of subjects. I have a proven record of improving student performance.
When it comes to ACT, I know how to elevate a student to his or her maximum potential. Pure knowledge alone is not good enough to do well on the test. I have a number of tips and tricks up my sleeve that will help you go into the exam with confidence!
Most importantly, I am very sensitive to each of my students individual needs. I keep all of my lessons light-hearted yet focused to minimize stress and fatigue while maximizing productivity. My teaching structure for all subjects consists of so much more than content cramming. I help my students build successful habits in addition to knowledge. This maximizes their potential to succeed long after they've completed their tutoring lessons. I feel personally invested in the success of every student I tutor. What is your teaching philosophy?
Even the smartest people had to start from somewhere, and they all had help along the way! If you have the will to learn, knowledge will find you.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I'd take some time to learn a bit about the student. I'd ask about their favorite academic subject, and their favorite non-academic activity. I'd also try to gauge the comfort level that the student has with the material.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Effective teaching requires you to be a guide. It doesn't do a student any good if you work out the problem for them. Guide them as they work through it! If they get stuck, it is appropriate to give a hint. The student will better comprehend the problem if they themselves have to think through each step. This also instills a great amount of pride once the problem is complete.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I'd make sure to keep reassuring the student that they are capable of doing anything they set their mind to. I'd continually assess the student to make sure that they are not becoming too frustrated or discouraged in any part of the process.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Take it one step at a time! I'd move through the steps of the processes one at a time to see where the student is getting stuck, and address any problems.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Highlighting and annotating are excellent reading strategies. Doing so keeps you more alert and forces you to notice small details. Re-reading is also a helpful tool.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Show them real-world applications to what they are trying to learn. Learning is a lot more exciting when you understand what you're building toward.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would have the student perform a number of practice problems ranging in difficulty. I would also occasionally have them explain a problem to me as if they were the ones tutoring me. If you can explain a concept, that means you can do it yourself.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Give the student various practice problems and see what trips them up.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Assess the student’s abilities, and focus on what they get stuck on. Practice problems are a good gauge of this.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Laptop, textbook, whiteboard, calculator(sometimes).
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Compliment them whenever they do something right. Never give too much negative feedback in a row. Start slow, then build the student up to challenging tasks.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I always make sure that the student knows that I care very much about their success. They are more comfortable if they know that they can trust me. I also make sure to build their confidence early.
